History of Spain independence

Spain Independence Day has deep historical roots in the Roman Catholic tradition. It is linked to the apparition of the Virgin Mary in Caesaraugusta, now Zaragoza, during the Roman Empire, where Apostle Saint James the Greater received a divine vision in AD 40. A temple was built along the river Ebro, dedicated to the cult of Saint Mary, and over the centuries, pilgrims traveled to Zaragoza to venerate Our Lady of the Pillar. Together with Saint James in Compostela, the spirituality of Christians across the Iberian Peninsula centered around this sacred tradition.

On 27 May 1642, Zaragoza officially recognized Our Lady of the Pillar as a symbol of Hispanidad, and the date became a feast commemorating La Virgen del Pilar. Later, in 1730, Pope Clement XII allowed the feast to be celebrated across the Spanish Empire. By 23 September 1892, Queen Regent Maria Christina of Austria, through a Royal Decree in San Sebastián and proposed by Prime Minister Antonio Cánovas del Castillo, declared 12 October 1892 a national day marking the 4th centenary of the discovery of America. This decree highlighted Spain’s ties with American countries and Italy, the homeland of Columbus, emphasizing joint commemoration, international importance, and cordial agreements with other nations.

Over time, this day, also known as Día de la Hispanidad or Day of Hispanicity, became a celebration of Spain’s connection to the international Hispanic community. In 1935, the day gained more prominence in Madrid, emphasizing its cultural and historical significance. Today, Spain Independence Day is commemorated with a festive atmosphere, as citizens participate in celebrations, parades, and ceremonial events, creating a vibrant festive mood across the country. The city’s festive counter often tracks events and public activities, helping people plan their participation, while a countdown reminds everyone of the approaching national celebration.
