Shaban is a precious month that holds an opportunity to prepare for Ramadan. It has been narrated that on Shab-e-Barat, the 15th Shaban, Allah (SWT) raises the deeds of His servants. This revered night inspires many Muslims to be encouraged toward extra and sincere worship. Scholars often refer to this time as mid-Shaban, considering it a significant day of worship. While some believe this month has Islamic perspective and value, others do not. In south-Asian communities, the night is widely known as the night of forgiveness or salvation, also called Laylat al-Bara’at or Laylat an-Nisf.

Is Shab-e-Barat a public holiday?

Shab-e-Barat is not a public holiday in many countries, including Saudi Arabia and the UAE. However, some South Asian countries like Pakistan and Bangladesh may observe it as a public holiday, depending on government decisions each year.

When is Shab-e-Barat in 2026?

Shab-e-Barat (15 Sha‘ban 1447 AH) is expected to fall on Wednesday, 4 February 2026, based on astronomical calculations used in many Islamic calendars

The history of 15th Shaban

The Prophet (PBUH) was reported by Aishah (RA) to have said that Allah descends on the night of the middle of Shaban to the lowest heaven and forgives more than the numbers of hairs on the sheep of Banu Kalb, an Arab tribe renowned for their great flocks. This hadith is found in Ibn Majah. Although there is a difference of opinion regarding the authenticity of this hadith, collectively, narrations mention the virtue of this night.

Significance of the night of the Shab-e-Barat (15th Shaban)?

The significance of Shab-e-Barat, one of the greatest nights of the year for ibaadah and worship, lies in the belief that Allah (SWT) raises the deeds of His servants on this day. It is seen as an opportunity for mercy, where sins—both past and future—are forgiven, and needs may be fulfilled if one turns to Allah. The Prophet (PBUH) said that on the 15th of Shaban, from sunset until dawn, Allah asks His servants: “Is there anyone seeking forgiveness so that I may forgive him? Is there anyone seeking provision so I may provide for him? Is there anyone suffering so I may relieve his suffering?” as narrated in Ibn Majah.

What makes the countdown to Shab-e-Barat spiritually meaningful?

Knowing exactly how many days are left until Shab-e-Barat can motivate believers to repent, pray, give charity, and prepare their hearts ahead of time. The countdown isn’t just technical—it’s a reminder for spiritual reflection.

How does Shab-e-Barat impact Ramadan preparation?

Since Shab-e-Barat occurs just two weeks before Ramadan, it acts as a spiritual checkpoint. Many Muslims use the countdown to both events to gradually increase worship, plan fasts, or recite the Qur’an in advance.
