Is Rajab a Public Holiday?
Rajab is not a public holiday in most countries. However, specific days within Rajab—such as Lailat al Miraj (27th Rajab)—may be observed as public holidays in some Muslim-majority countries. The general month itself is recognized for its spiritual importance but is not officially marked as a nationwide public holiday.
What is Rajab?
Rajab is the seventh month of the Islamic calendar and one of the four sacred months ordained by Allah (SWT). This sacred month holds a special place in the hijri calendar, as it marks a time for worshippers to focus on holy rituals, reflection, and self-purification. Being one of the most precious periods occurring before Sha’ban and Ramadan, it offers spiritual benefits and virtues to those who seek them. Rajab is not only a reminder of devotion but also a month filled with immense blessings. Many believers increase their prayers and good deeds during these days, aiming to gain closeness to Allah (SWT). This month is a festive time for the faithful, reminding us of the countdown to the holiest days ahead. On our festive counter, you can track the upcoming sacred months and understand the importance of each one.
History of Rajab
The month of Rajab is historically significant in Islam. It is believed that the parents of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) were married in Rajab, and he was conceived during this sacred month. Furthermore, Ali (RA), one of the closest companions of the Prophet and his son-in-law through marriage to Fatima, was also born in Rajab. One of the most significant events associated with this month is the Night Journey and Ascension—Al Isra’ Wal Mi’raj. During this miraculous event, the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) traveled from Makkah to Jerusalem on Buraq and ascended to the heavens to meet Allah (SWT). It was during this journey that Muslims were gifted the daily prayers.
Initially, fifty prayers were commanded, but after meeting with Musa (AS), the Prophet (PBUH) repeatedly requested a reduction until the final number was set to five daily prayers. Despite the reduction, the voice of the Prophet (PBUH) sounded ashamed to ask for more ease. Allah (SWT) rewarded this number as equal in value to fifty, highlighting the importance of Rajab in shaping a fundamental practice of Islam. As this month approaches, many Muslims use a festive counter to mark the journey of their faith and the sacred events that continue to inspire their spiritual lives. The countdown to Rajab reminds us that this festive and spiritual month is a time of reward, reflection, and divine connection.
