History of the Independence Day of Monaco

Monaco is a unique country with a rich history and culture, known as one of the smallest countries in the world but with a large population relative to its size. Situated on the French Riviera, Monaco is surrounded by France and the Mediterranean Sea. Often called the “Billionaires’ Playground,” it attracts wealthy people from around the globe. The Monaco National Day is traditionally chosen by the ruling prince. Until recently, it coincided with the saint day of the prince’s namesake, but since Prince Albert II took the throne, the celebration continues on Saint Rainier’s Day, not St. Albert’s Day on November 15.

Monaco’s history dates back to Stone Age human settlements, with archaeological discoveries housed at the Museum of Prehistoric Anthropology. Various ancient civilizations such as the Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Romans, and Greeks knew the area’s headlands well. The House of Grimaldi, Monaco’s ruling family since 1297, is one of Europe’s oldest dynasties. Originating from a Genoese leader of the Guelphs, this family allied with France, except during a short period from 1524 to 1641 when Monaco was under Spain’s protection. France annexed Monaco in 1793, but after Napoleon’s fall, the Grimaldi family returned. Monaco became an independent nation following the Franco-Monégasque treaty in 1861.

This history reflects the unique cultural and political identity that Monaco celebrates during its National Day, making it a festive event on the counter of European celebrations. Each year, the countdown to this festive day reminds both citizens and visitors of Monaco’s rich heritage and enduring sovereignty.
