What is a Mubahila?

In Islam, Mubahila is a monumental event that signifies a noble confrontation of truth and purity against falsehood and liars. The term Mubahila, derived from the Arabic word “bahala,” means to invoke the curse of God upon those who dispute the truth. It was a unique dispute conclusively resolved by invoking divine judgment. Prophet Muhammad (saww), along with his Ahlulbayt, stood upon the purity of their status and invoked God’s curse upon the liars from Najran. The event, commemorated as Eid Al-Mubahila, holds great significance in the history of Islam, as it reflects the elevated status of the Prophet’s family and the ultimate victory of truth. This term is used to describe an event upon which the noble family of the Prophet was involved in a direct confrontation in the name of God and Islam, serving as a timeless example of standing firm in the face of dispute.

Eid-e-Mubahila & its history

Event of Najram

Eid-e-Mubahila is celebrated to remember the historic event that took place in the city of Najran during the Islamic month of Zulhijja, in the year 10 AH. A delegation of Christians arrived from Najran to discuss the true status of Hazrat Isa (Jesus). The discussion between Prophet Muhammad (pbuh&hp) and the Christian priest, Abdul Masih, revolved around whether Jesus was a mortal created by God or should be deified. The Christian monks argued, but Prophet Muhammad revealed a verse, which stated that like Adam, Jesus was created from dust and was not God Himself.

The reason for Mubahila was their refusal to accept this truth. As the argument continued, the Christian priests were invited to a spiritual contest—to call upon God to curse the liars. This call to Mubahila, mentioned in the Quran as “our sons, your sons,” led to the Prophet summoning himself and his family. The early next morning, the Prophet walked with Imam Hussain (as) in his lap, holding the finger of Imam Hasan, followed by Fatima (as) and Imam Ali al Murtaza. The Christian delegation, led by their chief monk and a huge crowd, witnessed the holy personalities approaching the open field erected for the event.

jizya

The chief monk, seeing their noble and pure souls, advised the delegation not to continue the contest. He feared the truth and beseeched God, agreeing to a peaceful settlement. The Christians were allowed to offer jizya and continue practicing their faith. The truth was established without conflict, and the Christian priests accepted the agreement, acknowledging the elevated position of the Prophet and his family. Eid-e-Mubahila is thus commemorated as a victory of truth, faith, and the divine status of Ahlulbayt.
